The day got its start in 1922 when a dozen candy companies in Cleveland, Ohio, got together to make the day a little sweeter. The companies distributed more than 20,000 candies to some of Cleveland’s most vulnerable people, including orphans, the homeless, and senior citizens. The concept caught on with movie celebrities of the time, who were often seen handing out candy to movie patrons and hospital patients.
