Beaufort History Museum
The Beaufort History Museum traces its roots to July 20, 1939, when its constitution was approved at a meeting of the original board of trustees. The museum was formed “to increase and diffuse knowledge” by protecting places and preserving objects of artistic, historic and scientific interest.
The museum has been open to the public for most of the time since then. The city of Beaufort accepted the fiduciary responsibility for the collection in 1990 and took possession of the collection in 2008. In 2011, the Beaufort History Museum Inc. -- a nonprofit, 501(c)3 organization -- was chartered by the city to care for the collection and maintain a public museum.
Through its displays and outreach programs, the museum remains true to its original mission, preserving and showcasing the rich history of South Carolina’s second-oldest city.
