BEAUFORT’S FALL TOUR OF HOMES OFFERS AN INSIDE LOOK AT PRIVATE HISTORICAL PLANTATIONS, HOMES AND GAR

This October, the annual Fall Festival of Houses and Gardens returns to Beaufort, S.C., to offer visitors a rare opportunity to explore private historic homes, gardens and plantations that are not generally open to the public.  The festival, which will run from October 25 until October 27, celebrates more than 300 years of unique Beaufort architecture.

Three tours will be available to individuals during the festival, including the Walking Tour, the Ramble Around Beaufort, and the Kitchens & Cuisine Tour.

  • The Walking Tour is available on Friday, October 25, from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. and 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. It includes private homes in Beaufort’s National Historic Landmark District and features approximately 200 years of architecture history.

  • The Ramble Around Beaufort Tour is available on Saturday, October 26, from 10 to 3 p.m. and 11 to 4 p.m. This tour offers a glimpse at historic homes, gardens and plantations ranging from simple to grand within the city and countryside of Beaufort. Please note that automobile transportation is required to visit country sites.

  • The Kitchens & Cuisine Tour takes place on Sunday, October 27, from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. The tour focuses on five historic homes in downtown Beaufort and Lady’s Island. At each residence, a local chef will prepare a Lowcountry specialty dish for guests’ enjoyment. Homes are located in downtown Beaufort and on Lady’s Island, so automobile transportation is required.

Tickets for the tours are currently available for purchase for $45 each and tickets are limited; advance ticket purchase is recommended. To order tickets, call (843) 379-3331, visit www.historicbeaufort.org or mail order at P.O. Box 11, Beaufort, S.C. 29901. All sales are final. Tours will proceed rain or shine.

Collectively, the self-guided tours allow individuals to witness three centuries of architecture and are the primary fundraiser for the Historic Beaufort Foundation, an organization dedicated to preserving sites of historic or architectural significance in Beaufort County.

Sponsors of the 2013 Fall Festival of Houses and Gardens include: BB&T, Publix Super Market Charities, Lowcountry Real Estate and Spring Island Realty.

Individuals interested in learning more about or in becoming a member of the foundation should visit www.historicbeaufort.org.
