Annual two-day festival celebrates local food, live music and contests

Beaufort, S.C., August 14, 2014 – The annual Beaufort Shrimp Festival will celebrate its 20th year at the Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park on Friday, October 3 and Saturday, October 4. The festival will feature local food, live music, contests and much more.

The free festival kicks off with a night of live music and dancing on Friday at 6 p.m. with a performance by The Company Band, a premier Charleston band known for its versatility and talented members. Food and beverages will be available for purchase beginning at 6 p.m. The Arts & Crafts Market opens at noon.

On Saturday, the 5k Run/Walk and the children’s Popcorn Shrimp Run begin at 8 a.m. Food and beverage booths, the Arts & Crafts Market and the children’s area will open at 11 a.m., followed by the adult Shrimp Heading and children’s Shrimp Peeling competitions, Restaurant Competition, the Sea Island Rotary’s Charity Shrimp Race and live entertainment.

Local restaurants will compete for the coveted “Silver Cup” award at Saturday’s Restaurant Competition, beginning at 4:45 p.m. Other awards include the title of “Best Shrimp Dish,” “Best Booth Decoration” and “People’s Choice.” Restaurants are required to use wild-caught South Carolina shrimp.

The Sea Island Rotary Club’s Annual Charity Shrimp Race gives spectators the opportunity to adopt one or more of the 5,000 rubber floating shrimp that are dropped into the Beaufort River. Shrimp will float toward a designated finish line and the first 10 to finish will earn their owners $5,000 in cash, plus offer the chance to win $1M.
