Scoop it up and join in the celebration in various events around Beaufort County in June. Much of the debris collected by the community will be recycled into a large scale "Locomocean" assemblage at ARTworks by artist Terry Brennan— the public is invited to help him build too.
Brennan will help people forget the original purpose of the debris (like being a water bottle or a lost oar or bad old litter,) and instead learn to notice shapes and sizes, in order to "recognize what your inner artist wants to inflict on it" for the artistic process of building a large-scale, public art sculpture called "Locomocean". He will work outside in front of ARTworks community center for a few weeks (drop by!), culminating with a festival day on June 16, 10am to 3pm, in the same spot— Center Stage in front of ARTworks in Beaufort Town Center.
In addition to beach sweep days, and school visits from the Port Royal Foundation, on June 8 the Friends of Hunting Island offer "Dogs Night Out" at 5pm and "Sunset Yoga" at 6:45 at South Beach. That same day, the Coastal Discovery Museum offers a lecture series and local seafood luncheon (and keep your eyes peeled for a rainbarrel truck sale.) On June 12, Saltus offers a sustainable seafood dinner in downtown Beaufort.
"Locomocean" assemblage workshops with artist Terry Brennan are June 2 & 9, from 10am to noon, free. This is the time to bring your recyclables and learn about public art and keeping debris out of our vital and salty waters. Saturday, June 16 is the big culminating celebration, free. All of the participating organizations will have booths & activities set up for all ages: interactive ocean experiences (touch tanks! gyotaku fish printing!) speakers on the topic of science, live music by the Rose Family Band, and entertainment from Rick Hubbard and his harmonious, dolphin-loving kazoos.
