What People are Saying about Beaufort South Carolina

November 30, 2010 - A Story about a dog named Beaufort

Would you like to hear a story about a dog named Beaufort, a rescued therapy dog who has made over 500 visits? After Hurricane Isabel throttled our area, we lost our 16 year old dog. Looking at a nearby rescue group, Partners Among Cats and Canines, we found some Golden Retriever/Gordon Setter puppies. Only one puppy remained, soon destined to find a forever home.

Two weeks prior to this rescue, I surprised my husband with a visit to our favorite destination, Beaufort, S.C. As in prior visits, we stayed at the wonderful Rhett House Inn. After eating a delectable southern breakfast on the porch at the Rhett House, we attended a graduation at Parris Island where my husband served as drill instructor for 2 1/2 years; we. looked at property on Fripp Island, explored the beach on Hunting Island and of course, ate Frogmore Stew!

Arriving back home, we soon were notified we could adopt the rescued puppy. After a short discussion as to whether his name should be Beaufort or Rhett, we named this beautiful puppy after Beaufort S.C. Our Beaufort is now a Canine Good Citizen and a certified therapy dog who has made over 500 visits to Virginia Oncology Associates and De Paul Hospital, where he is beloved by the patients undergoing chemotherapy, and the hardworking doctors and nurses. At the Central Library in Virginia Beach and various elementary schools, Beaufort patiently listens to children learning to read. On our frequent visits, we are often asked about Beaufort's name and we are quick to clarify that he is named for Beautiful Beaufort by the Sea, NOT "BOfort" North Carolina!

August 22, 2010 - There is so much beauty to see and history to learn

I was on a day trip from Columbia, SC with a wonderful tour. We came by bus (Capital Tours, West Columbia) and had such a grand time. Evelene Stevenson, the most charming tour guide ever, led our group on a tour of the islands. She crammed more information and history into those few hours, along with songs from a by gone era that made the time just fly. What an incredible spokesperson she is for her beloved Beaufort. Her book/magazine "The Spirit of Old Beaufort" is priceless. I came home and saved it for my Sunday afternoon treat, and was not disappointed. I read every word in the magazine. As a native of South Carolina that has spent the past 57 years in Pennsylvania, I fully intend to catch up on all the wonderful Southern history now that I have returned to this wonderful state. I am so glad I had the opportunity to take my first visit to Beaufort, and thanks to Evelene, it will not be my last. There is so much beauty to see and history to learn. I did indeed "Catch the Spirit of Old Beaufort".

August 12, 2010 - Wonderful Memories, Beaufort will always mean the 'true south' to me

I first visited Beaufort in 2005 when my daughter moved to Lady's Island. I fell in love with the Lowcountry. Sea grass, salt marsh, shrimp boats at sunset. We have returned many times, renting houses on Fripp Island. I have wonderful memories of walking the beaches on Fripp and Hunting Island, collecting shells and sand dollars by the bucket full, watching dolphins jump around our boat as we rode up the Beaufort River toward the ACE Basin, sunset dinners at the Dockside and sitting on the swing on Bay Street watching the boats come in.

We have since purchased property further north in Murrells Inlet - but each day I wear my Beaufort destination bracelet that my husband purchased for me at the Bay Street Jewelers. Beaufort will always mean the "true South" to me.

My son is a Marine stationed at Parris Island and he lives in Beaufort, so we visit often from Jacksonville. I love Beaufort - it's breathtaking, so peaceful and beautiful. I have fallen in love with the old Oak Trees and the awesome historical disctrict, all the shops and the beautiful homes.

I was just in Beaufort this past week..as always wonderful. Dolphins were going wild in the water and they were just beautiful. We were at the right place at the right time, saw one jump completely out of the water! Beaufort is such a beautiful site...

My husband and I spent our honeymoon on Hunting Island in 1985 and planned our first boat outing there.

February 4, 2010 - Among the best food we ate while visiting the Lowcountry.

My husband and I, from Virginia, and friends from Texas visited Beaufort in November on vacation. Please pass the word to Panini's that the food was excellent and among the best we ate while visiting Hilton Head, Beaufort, and Savannah. We also thoroughly enjoyed the tours we received at the John Mark Verdier House and the Episcopal church. As I am a tour guide in Virginia, I also appreciated the Old Spirit of Beaufort walking tour. Keep up the good work.  The communication your organization provides visitors before they arrive is also to be highly commended.
