Local concertgoers are in for a rare treat on October
13th at 8:00pm and 16th at 3:00pm when The
Beaufort Symphony opens its 2011-2012 season. Guest soloist,
Alexander Pershounin will offer the Koussevitsky Bass
Concerto, accompanied by the orchestra. Dr. Alexander
Pershounin is Associate Professor of Bass at Columbus State
University in Georgia, where he is also director of jazz
studies. He has performed extensively throughout Europe and
the United States and has appeared with world class artists ranging
from Itzhak Perlman and Yo Yo Ma to Ray Charles and Benny
Golson.
The bass is the largest member of the string family. It
is shaped like a giant violin, and the instrument’s strings can be
bowed or plucked while the player stands or sits on a high
stool. The bass, usually found near the back of the orchestra,
takes center stage for this concerto, which was written by the
young Serge Koussevitzsky, legendary Russian conductor of the
Boston Symphony.

By John C. Williams Mayors & Cities on
October 12, 2011 BEAUFORT ( John C. Williams
) Everywhere you turn in Beaufort, South Carolina, history
calls out – from the gracefully restored antebellum homes to the
centuries-old live oaks, from the fish-filled waters to the quiet
graveyards and Sea Island cotton. These are just a few
reasons why I love my city.
You’ve probably seen South Carolina’s Beaufort and not known it:
The city served as backdrops to blockbuster films including
The Prince of Tides, The Big Chill, Forrest
Gump and
The Great Santini.
Tucked away on the South Carolina Atlantic coast midway between
Charleston, SC and Savannah, GA, Beaufort features a jewel-box
National Historic Landmark District, a waterfront park lined with
shops and restaurant and easy access to the beach.
Throughout 2011, Beaufort celebrates a special and historic
birthday – its 300
th. That’s a lot of candles and a lot
of cake – but the Tricentennial is a lot of years.
“For a community that celebrates our unique history and culture on
an almost daily basis, 300 years is a huge benchmark,” Beaufort
Mayor Billy Keyserling said. Next up in the year-long party: An
historical parade through downtown on September 17 to highlight
different periods of Beaufort’s history, from the lows to the
highs.
Beaufort was founded in 1711 by the English, although its
beginnings date back to Spanish explorers in 1514. Beaufort was
named for Englishman Henry Somerset, Duke of Beaufort (1684-1714),
one of the Lords Proprietors of Carolina.

cottage on Palm Key to be used as a retreat for veterans and their
families, according to a press release.
Of the donations, $210,000 was in cash and $200,000 was
in-kind from organizations that include American Airlines and the

The last time Justin Gaertner stood on the yellow footprints
at Parris Island, his shoes were not attached to metal legs.
He was a young buck only days out of high school when he
stepped off a bus, was ordered to the painted footprints and told:
"You are now aboard Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, South
Carolina, and you have just taken the first step toward becoming a
member of the world's finest fighting force, the United States
Marine Corps."
On Sept. 17, Cpl. Justin Gaertner returned to the place where
his life marched off in a new direction.

Hunting Island a coveted S.C. gem
Anyone searching for heaven on Earth could reach a peak at
Hunting Island State Park.
Entering this Atlantic Ocean-side park, on U.S. 21 about 20
miles southeast of Beaufort, motorists won’t find the turn for the
gatehouse until two miles past the welcome sign.
Riding the park roads to reach its 5-mile-long coastline,
visitors might feel small among a forest of palmetto trees dwarfed
by a canopy of long-leaf pines.

Islands of South Carolina
Did you know, it was 22 years ago when the last hurricane
touched the islands of South Carolina? Hurricane Hugo passed 53

mainland, set back from the ocean, tucked between the protected
