Resting Place of Robert Smalls/ Tabernacle Baptist Church

11. Resting Place of Robert Smalls/ Tabernacle Baptist Church

Built in 1840, Tabernacle Baptist Church is the resting place of one of Beaufort’s most beloved icons, Robert Smalls, who was born into slavery in 1839. Smalls’ list of accomplishments is extensive and impressive. During the American Civil War, Smalls was stationed with the slave crew, working a steam ship for the Confederate army. He managed to overtake the ship and turn it over to Union forces. Then, he went on to a distinguished career of public service including serving in the South Carolina House of Representatives, the United States Senate, and four terms in the United States House of Representatives. Smalls also served as a major general in the state militia and later served as Port Collector for Beaufort. Tabernacle Baptist Church was originally constructed as a meetinghouse and lecture room. In 1863, Rev. Solomon Peck created a new 500 member African-American congregation, many of whom came from the Beaufort Baptist Church, who then acquired the Tabernacle building and continue to use it for worship today.
